This cosy hand knit wool cap was inspired by stories of Basque Whalers. It is knit in moss stitch and stocking stitch sections. Its style has a flip over top attached to the side. This is where the handmade tassel is placed.
It is best to wear this cap with the tassel covering an ear.

Basque Whalers were sailors from France and Spain that visited this region in the 1500's. Archaeologists have unearthed grave sites in Labrador. We know from one such site that these sailors wore knit wool caps.
This cap is designed by Christine LeGrow and represents her own interpretation of how these caps might have appeared. The colours are inspired from the black and white paintings of other artists' imaginations of the Basque Whaler's voyage at sea.
